Unique accessories for your grounds

Cheesebrough Wood Rakes & Wooden Flagsticks

Grounds Accessory Selection

Grounds accessory selection takes time and effort. First, the management concerns of expense and annual budget allowances. Then maintenance determinations concerning function and durability (metal, synthetic, fiberglass, wood?). And then creatively blending your choices into the theme of your property. Just when you feel your work is complete, you introduce your "Final Four" to owners, designers, architects, committees, D.O.G., managers, members, potential patrons and maintenance staff, to get your list started.

We realize that Cheesebrough products will not make the final cut for most properties. For the very few, Cheesebrough will assist you in building a slight edge in the very finely tuned world of upscale golf.

Cheesebrough Product Selection

Determining the proper Cheesebrough product for your property is a matter of understanding your environment and your players. Although you likely know the environment on your grounds, a world climate map can be found at http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/climate.htm   Educating your clients on how you wish for them to treat your property and its accessories will be a more subtle affair.

Average Environments: Our Recommendations
For Temperate and Cold climates, our domestic hardwoods have provided excellent performance for over 100 years

Domestic hardwoods:
On the positive side, domestics are lightweight, durable, readily available, and relatively inexpensive. On the negative side, they require periodic maintenance to protect them from the damaging rays of the sun and attack from organisms that cause decay.

Extreme Environments: Our Recommendations
For the more extreme environments commonly experienced in Tropical and Dry climate zones, neither synthetic accessories or domestic hardwoods will have an acceptable lifespan. You would be best served with exotic hardwoods.

Exotic hardwoods:
On the positive side, exotics have natural resistance to decay and UV degradation. Left natural, the wood
will turn gray over time, but stays quite smooth. Periodic applications of sealer will keep the products looking fresh. On the negative side exotics are heavier than domestics, more costly, and not as readily available in the marketplace.

Finishes

Flagsticks:There are two types of finishes for flagsticks, a film coating in either clear or color, and penetrating sealer. Sealers do their work in the structure of the wood, and films by coating the surface. The majority of the flagsticks we build have a film coating.

Rakes: Our domestic hardwood rakes are protected with a petroleum based penetrating sealer. We have not had good success with water borne sealers. Exotic hardwoods can be left natural, turning gray over time, or they can be kept looking new with a penetrating sealer. We do not recommend film coatings on rakes as it can be difficult to maintain.
